Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial

What is Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale ?

The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale is an international art festival held every three years since 2000. With the Echigo-Tsumari region as its stage, it is the world’s largest art festival by area. The overall objective of the event is to employ art as a vehicle for revealing the latent values embedded in the region, enhancing their appeal and spreading them to the world, in order to find a way to revitalize the region. We are very pleased to announce that there will be over 100 artists and projects for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2012.

“People embraced by nature”

Many people from all walks of life have come and share the sense of place unique to Echigo-Tsumari. Central theme of the activities conducted under the Triennale is “people embraced by nature”.

Our deepest wish is to bring smiles on the faces of the senior residents, as we believe that places where elderly people lives happily are places of happiness. The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale believes in the power of art to drive rural revitalization, through revealing regional assets, learning from local wisdom and creating artworks that revive spaces. Thanks to the support of people of different ages and backgrounds from Japan, and overseas. The Triennale will be held for the fifth time this year. With gratitude for all of those who have been involved, we return once more to our starting point, and embark on a journey dedicated to happiness.

Echigo-Tsumari’s preparations for the Triennale 2012 is being conducted under trying conditions since 2011. The region is experiencing unusually snowy winter, the aftermath of earthquakes from the 3-11 disaster and torrential rain. With wishes for reconstruction and hopes as these activities reach out to Tohoku, we remind ourselves of the basic principle of “people embraced by nature”.

Please come and participate!

我們期待2012年可以有更多香港的義工一起參與,有興趣參與的人士請盡快與我們聯絡 !

The Hong Kong volunteers began to participate in the 3rd Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2006. Fifteen volunteers from the University of Hong Kong and students from urban Japan form a team known as “Kohebi-tai” (little shrimp gang) participated in the making of over 300 artworks. Volunteers were assigned a variety of tasks from simple clean-up, carpentry to fulfilling all sorts of creative ideas from artists and local residents. A day's work was usually summarized with a trip to hot spring and a night of sharing different experiences.

As our volunteer base continues to increase and strengthen over the years, we have begun recruiting volunteers for the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2012. Please contact us as soon as possible for more information.
